Boycott Starbucks? Nah.

Although I frequent Starbuks a whole lot less these days, I'm still a fan.

Friend and supercommenter Aja passes on this op-ed piece from the Christian Post by Russell D. Moore on the call for Christians to boycott Starbucks. Being a Starbucks fan, I had to check it out:

Twenty Questions: Mad Men

I haven't done a Twenty Questions in a while, so what better way to kick it off here at East of Eden than with last night's season premiere of "Mad Men"? If for whatever reason you didn't watch it but are planning to, needless to say, don't read any further. Spoilers galore abound.

Some Saturday stuff.

K is off fishing with some friends this weekend, so it's just me and Z. She hasn't been too naughty- I did get a head butt last night which resulted in a busted lip- so I've had time to bake some Irish soda bread, do yoga, and play puzzles with my little Laila Ali.

I also did some reading that I want to pass along here. First this story about the late great Roger Ebert and his widow Chaz:

Music you should hear: Madeleine Peyroux

I've been a Billie Holiday fan for years (I like to tuck a white flower behind my ear from time to time and even have a black and white glossy of Lady Day performing hanging in the hall), so I was pleased to read this New York Times piece recommending Madeleine Peyroux's sweet voice:

Death, no more

Last November, my little sister Joscelyne died.

She was 28, married with two kids, Justin and Sophia.

She loved cooking, baking and singing.

She had earned one master's degree, and was in the midst of completing another.

She loved fashion- shoes, dresses, makeup and jewelry.

She was a complete celebrity gossip hound- Kim K, Kanye, Jigga and Beyonce.

She was my little sister, and just like that, our relationship, with all it's ups and downs, stopped. No "fin" with the rolling credits, no happily ever after. Her death handed me an end, but nothing close to a resolution.

Full stop.

Some more on gay marriage from Christian bloggers...

I've pretty much finished up Jesus, The Bible, and Homosexuality, and when I get a chance, I'll share the major points writer Jack Rogers make. I wanted to provide a couple more perspectives on the issue I've read the last few days. First, from Joy at A Deeper Story:

It's not over...

For those of us Christians who follow liturgical calendars, it's still Easter time. Allison at Rambling Follower did a great post reminding readers of this yesterday:

Easter - or Eastertide - is an entire liturgical season, stretching all the way to Pentecost. I mentioned this to our sons last night, as a way of explaining why their pane di Pasqua would not be ready by dinner. "Why doesn't anyone know that?" my 13 year old asked me.

Why indeed? It seems our sons' religious education - both at home and in the parish - has fallen flat.

Susan Stabile, a Catholic-to-Buddhist-back-to-Catholic writer (and a law professor) whose work I only discovered this morning, has written a whole blog post about continuing the celebration.

Easter Hope.

The Good Shepherd choir at the 10AM mass yesterday.

Happy Easter! I hope you had a blessed Triduum. I definitely did. I went to Good Friday service and was moved by the seven last words of Jesus. "Into your hands I commit my spirit." How powerful. I'm challenged to commit myself to God, not only in death, but repeatedly, daily even, in life.

Yesterday morning, K, Z and I headed off to church, which, as usual, was far more attended, lol. It was a very lovely service. Afterwards, my pastor's son, Ramon, pulled on a giant bunny suit and took pictures with the kids (and us grown folks, too).

Yesterday, I wrote rather quickly that while I gave Lecrae props for talking about Same Sex Marriage on his Facebook page, I didn't agree with the logic of his arguments against it (comparing SSM to child marriage and incest). The only example I actually think he has a point on is polygamy. Even Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor brought it up polygamy on Tuesday during the Prop 8 Hearing. What I was trying to articulate, but probably failed at, is that SSM opponents need to use better arguments. If your best defense is a slippery slope argument, then you're pretty quickly going to slide into losing.

Sweet Communion

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.”

Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.

-Matthew 26:26-28

Lent came to a close on Sunday, with the waving of palms and shouts of "Hosanna!". Easter is a few days away, and tomorrow is Good Friday, the heart of the Passion. Today is also a day of note for Christians who follow the liturgical calendar. It's Maundy Thursday. If you're unfamiliar with it, that's okay. I had no idea it existed until about...

Speaking of Lecrae...

So as I'm enjoying a few Z-free minutes (thanks Babe!), I logged on to Facebook and noticed a storm a-brewing over a bunch of status updates by Lecrae, who was included in a post on Gospel Hip Hop artists I put up earlier. Looks like he decided to step into the Same Sex Marriage debate:

... we have rappers such as Lecrae and Sho Baraka, who are bringing faith and inspiration to the masses, as opposed to more tired lyrics about money, drugs, alcohol and even rape. From CoCo Brothers:

In the wake of the horrid Steubenville Rape case, rapper Rick Ross is coming under fire for a lyric that describes drugging then raping a woman. From HuffPo:

Ross collaborated with Atlanta rapper Rocko for the single, titled "U.O.E.N.O.," off Rocko's mixtape "Gift of Gab 2." Although the mix dropped in February, the track featuring Ross is just now gaining traction because of a lyric presumably about date rape.

Overcoming the "Dark Knight"

(Source)

There's a scene in The Dark Knight Rises that really gets to me. I mean, when I watched it last summer, I was bawling in the theatre. And no, it had nothing to do with the sheer creepiness of Tom Hardy's Bane's voice, which I wholeheartedly believe, is exactly how Satan sounds- at least in my nightmares. Anyway, the scene to which I refer is the one with beaten, back still healing Bruce Wayne attempts to escape his underground imprisonment. In order to gain his freedom, he must some how scale a ridiculously high, circular enclosure. Many, many other prisoners have tried but failed. And fell, to their painful deaths. Yet, our superhero takes up the challenge. He. Must.
