Transforming Blight into Beauty

Really inspirational video here from Christianity Today on one woman's mission to transform inner city Detroit, one garden at a time.

Gardening to Make Beauty Out of Blight from This Is Our City on Vimeo.

There are a ton of videos here with stories about revitalizing various cities- Portland, Richmond, New York and more. Those featured feel called of God to live out their faith through community building. Very cool.

I have to say, there really is something about transforming the physical to inspire pride and build the spiritual. People do seem to care more when a lot is a park as opposed to a vacant store. I caught this TEDx vid filmed in Europe and the speaker was saying something similar after getting delapidated buildings fixed up in his native Albania. The residents stopped dumping trash and started caring for their communities in a way they hadn't in years.

"... the awesomely gifted Alisha DeFreitas... tells her story of  her brush with the Culture of Death and her refusal to play the world’s game. I love that she gives two well-aimed upraised middle fingers: one to the abortion culture of the Left, and one to the Randian Makers vs. Takers class warriors of the Right. She’s one of my heros."
